Merck Downplayed Vioxx Risks, Doctor Testifies

Law360, New York (November 29, 2006, 12:00 AM EST) -- Merck & Co. told its salespeople not to tell doctors about a study by a Harvard Medical School professor that found that Vioxx increased the risk of heart attacks, a researcher testified Tuesday in a trial in New Orleans.

“I can think of no legitimate reason why it would ever be appropriate to suppress negative findings about a drug risk,” Dr. Jerome Avorn said on a tape played for jurors in federal court in New Orleans.
