EC To Monitor Pharma Patent Settlements

Law360, New York (January 12, 2010, 4:01 PM EST) -- The European Union's antitrust watchdog has asked a slew of pharmaceutical companies — including AstraZeneca PLC, Sanofi-Aventis SA, GlaxoSmithKline PLC and Boehringer Ingelheim GmbH — to submit copies of their patent settlement agreements, amid concerns that some settlements could deprive European consumers of a broader choice of medicines at lower prices.

The European Commission has launched “a number” of new antitrust investigations into the pharmaceutical industry since concluding its inquiry into competition in that sector, European Commissioner Neelie Kroes said Tuesday.
