DOJ Steps Up Monsanto Seed Probe

Law360, New York (January 14, 2010, 5:33 PM EST) -- The U.S. Department of Justice has asked Monsanto Co. to confirm that the agriculture giant will not block access to a popular version of genetically modified soybeans after the patent expires in 2014, the company said Thursday.

Monsanto said that the DOJ had issued a civil investigative demand requesting information on the company's soybean traits business, primarily to substantiate that farmers and seed companies will continue to have access to the Roundup Ready 1 seed trait.
