Judge Deals Blow to Qualcomm In Suit Over CDMA Licensing

Law360, New York (May 13, 2004, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A U.S. District Judge has ruled against Qualcomm in a long-running patent dispute with Maxim Integrated Products Inc., granting a partial summary judgment regarding Qualcomm's licensing agreements.

In its lawsuit, Qualcomm had contended that its technology licenses prohibit cell-phone makers from buying periphery equipment from companies such as Maxim, which sells receivers and transceivers for CDMA phones.

Maxim does not dispute the validity of the patents themselves, but claims Qualcomm is abusing its patent portfolio by preventing other companies from selling equipment to cell-phone makers....
