RIM Gets Motorola Message Patent Nixed In UK Spat

Law360, New York (February 3, 2010, 6:53 PM EST) -- A U.K. court has handed Research In Motion Ltd. a resounding win in the BlackBerry maker’s global feud with Motorola Inc., finding that a key Motorola patent covering messaging technology is invalid.

On Wednesday, the Honorable Mr. Justice Arnold of the Patents Court for the High Court of Justice ruled that the so-called Beletic patent was invalid for obviousness. And even if the patent were valid, the court said, neither of the two accused BlackBerry systems infringe the patent under the prevailing claim construction.
