Calif. County Sues GSK Over Alleged Avandia Risks

Law360, New York (March 2, 2010, 1:38 PM EST) -- The county of Santa Clara, Calif., has sued pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline PLC on behalf of California citizens for allegedly suppressing evidence that its diabetes drug Avandia causes heart attacks, drawing on claims in a recent report from the U.S. Senate Finance Committee.

The suit, filed Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, alleges that GSK knew of Avandia's risks even before it began selling the drug, but engaged in an aggressive false advertising campaign to persuade health care providers and insurers...
