NYC Jacks Up Penalties For Dumping In Harbor

Law360, New York (March 8, 2010, 5:46 PM EST) -- Dumping waste materials into New York Harbor has become a substantially more expensive offense under a new measure passed by the New York City Council, which upped potential fines from a maximum of $250 to as much as $20,000 for each violation.

The council voted unanimously in favor of amendments to the law adding civil penalties ranging between $1,500 and $10,000 for first anti-dumping violations and penalties from $5,000 to $20,000 for subsequent offenses, according to the legislation and council records.
