EU Keeps Only 2 Antitrust Exemptions For Insurers

Law360, New York (March 24, 2010, 6:12 PM EDT) -- In an update to existing regulations, European competition regulators have determined that only two types of insurance sector activities should be covered under a blanket antitrust exemption: insurance pools and data sharing.

In renewing its block exemption regulation for the insurance industry, the European Commission said in a statement Thursday that while the antitrust exemption should still cover the pools and data exchanges, two other areas currently exempted — policy conditions and security devices — should no longer receive blanket protection from European Union rules banning...
