DOT To Probe Sudden Acceleration In Toyotas

Law360, New York (March 31, 2010, 1:46 PM EDT) -- Facing lawmakers’ criticism that regulators failed to respond adequately to complaints about Toyota Motor Corp. vehicles, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has announced two scientific probes to identify the causes of sudden, unintended acceleration.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which is the U.S. Department of Transportation's auto safety agency, will enlist NASA engineers to examine electronic throttle systems in Toyotas, LaHood said Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the National Academy of Sciences will study unintended acceleration across the entire automobile industry.
