Mercury Flouted Consumer Laws: Calif. Insurance Chief

Law360, New York (April 13, 2010, 3:52 PM EDT) -- California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner has accused Mercury Insurance Group of ignoring state consumer protection laws by overcharging thousands of home and car insurance customers, illegally denying coverage and canceling policies without explanation.

Poizner announced on Monday the results of the California Department of Insurance's market conduct exam, which uncovered 35 categories of alleged violations of California insurance law between March 1, 2007, and May 31, 2007.
