Fla. Tomato Safety Bill On Way To Governor's Desk

Law360, New York (April 16, 2010, 3:56 PM EDT) -- A Florida bill giving the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services more authority over the state’s lucrative tomato industry is on its way to Gov. Charlie Crist after unanimously passing in the House of Representatives on Thursday.

The bill, which would set minimum safety standards for tomato growers throughout the Sunshine State, passed 114-0 in the House, about three weeks after passing 35-1 in the state Senate. It comes on the heels of a 2008 salmonella outbreak, and is an attempt by state industry leaders to...
