Nanotech Patenting Soars: Report

Law360, New York (June 20, 2004, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Patents awarded annually for nanotechnology inventions have tripled since 1996, with 10-fold or greater increases in some areas during the past three years, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Nanotechnology is generally defined as the development and use of structures that have a size of only a few nanometers, and embraces many technical arts; biotechnology, chemicals, computers and mechanical devices are just a few examples.

The National Science Foundation estimates that the worldwide market for nanotechnology will grow to $1 trillion in less than 15 years. Last...
