Swiss Regulators Crush €1.5B Orange-Sunrise Deal

Law360, New York (April 22, 2010, 4:01 PM EDT) -- Switzerland’s Competition Commission has rejected the proposed €1.5 billion ($2.3 billion) merger between French telecommunications giant France Telecom SA and Swiss telecom operator Sunrise Communications AG, claiming it would lead to market dominance in the cell phone sector.

The commission said Thursday that it would not approve the deal because the newly formed entity would share market dominance with Swisscom AG, Switzerland’s largest telecommunications provider, and would likely cut off new cell phone operators from entering the market.
