HHS Backs 'High-Risk' Pools Despite Opposition

Law360, New York (May 4, 2010, 3:04 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is moving full steam ahead with a program to provide health insurance coverage to individuals with pre-existing conditions, despite certain states’ decisions to decline boosting their own efforts to do so.

The department had asked all 50 state governors and insurance commissioners in April to consider running “high-risk” insurance pools as part of the Obama administration's sweeping federal health care reform, which includes a measure to extend temporary relief to such individuals.
