Steering Clear Of Legal Pitfalls In Hiring Unpaid Interns

Law360, New York (May 28, 2010, 12:28 PM EDT) -- With students and recent graduates champing at the bit for experience in a tight job market, employers could be tempted to bring them on as unpaid interns, but companies should be careful: Just because they're willing doesn't mean it's legal, attorneys say.

“Just because someone wants to or agrees to work for free or less than minimum wage doesn't mean it's OK,” said Laura Friedel, partner in the labor and employment service group at Levenfeld Pearlstein LLC.
