DOI To Split MMS Into 3 Independent Agencies

Law360, New York (May 19, 2010, 6:58 PM EDT) -- In response to the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the U.S. Department of the Interior on Wednesday announced plans to split the agency charged with overseeing offshore drilling into three independent units.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said dividing the Mineral Management Service into three separate units would eliminate the conflict in the agency's current mission of developing and collecting revenue from offshore energy production and enforcing environmental and safety standards.
