E.U. Advocate General Favors Budvar In Finland Budweiser Dispute

Law360 (June 29, 2004, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Czech brewer Budejovicky Budvar has won a partial victory in its claim to the Budweiser trademark in Finland, dealing a setback to Anheuser-Busch Cos. in its global, century-old battle for the beer brand.

A key legal opinion, put before the European Court of Justice Tuesday, recommends that Budvar AS, the Czech brewer, be given trademark protection of the Budweiser name in Finland.

Budvar registered the name in Finland in 1967, but a Finnish court removed its trademark in 1984 for lack of use, the report said....
