Beleaguered MMS Head Birnbaum Resigns

Law360, New York (May 27, 2010, 12:44 PM EDT) -- Minerals Management Service head Elizabeth Birnbaum resigned Thursday amid scrutiny over her agency's alleged failure to police the oil industry prior to the Deepwater Horizon disaster.

Birnbaum submitted a two-paragraph resignation letter to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar on Thursday, announcing her resignation effective immediately.

Following the sinking of the Deepwater Horizon, the MMS has faced serious questioning about its past competence in regulating the oil industry, including a pointed criticism from President Barack Obama, who said it had been too “cozy” with energy companies.
