FTC Reinstates Unocal Antitrust Case Over Patents

Law360, New York (July 7, 2004, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The Federal Trade Commission has reinstated antitrust charges against Unocal Corp. for urging California regulators to adopt clean fuel standards on which it had applied for patents.

The agency reversed an administrative law judge's decision that favored Unocal and ordered the case to be reviewed.

The FTC first filed an antitrust lawsuit against Unocal in March 2003, alleging that the company's anticompetitive tactics could cost consumers up to $500 million annually, or about 5 cents per gallon of gasoline.
