Progressive Sues Safeco Over Driver Monitoring Patent

Law360, New York (June 22, 2010, 2:34 PM EDT) -- Progressive Casualty Insurance Co. has filed a suit against Safeco Insurance Co. of Illinois, one of its auto sector rivals, accusing it of infringing a patent for a program that forgives motorists for accidents or tickets in exchange for monitoring how they drive and giving them tips.

The complaint, filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, names several Safeco corporate entities and the insurer's parent, the Boston-based Liberty Mutual Group Inc., as defendants.
