Antitrust Watchdog Eyes News Print Industry

Law360 (January 31, 2007, 12:00 AM EST) -- A merger between newsprint manufacturers Abitibi-Consolidated Inc. and Bowater Inc. has attracted the attention of the Department of Justice, which will possibly investigate not only the two companies, but may search for evidence of illegal cartels in the entire paper industry.

The two paper companies said on Monday that they would combine in an all-stock deal that would make them the "third-largest publicly traded paper and forest products company in North America."

The combined company, called AbitibiBowater Inc., will have annual revenue of about $7.9 billion...
