Ivory Coast Waste Case Gets Class Action Status

Law360, New York (February 2, 2007, 12:00 AM EST) -- The British High Court agreed on Friday to hear a 5,000-strong class action against international oil trader Trafigura, whose vessel allegedly discharged 480 tons of toxic waste onto the shores of Ivory Coast.

The sludge that erupted near the city of Abidjan was a mix of highly toxic petrochemical waste and caustic soda that has so far killed ten people. Thousands others have fallen ill, experiencing vomiting, diarrhea, nosebleeds, stomachaches and blistering of the skin.
