Kroes Hints At Action Against E.U. Energy Firms

Law360, New York (February 5, 2007, 12:00 AM EST) -- Europe’s largest energy companies were issued fresh warnings on Monday when European Union Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes hinted at an impending crackdown on anti-competitive practices in the energy sector.

Speaking at an energy conference in Essen, Kroes said that in order to achieve stronger competition in the energy sector, competition law must continue to be enforced and the regulatory framework must be strengthened, adding that “permanent structural changes” are needed to resolve the problem of vertically integrated supply and network companies.
