Decades After NYC Spill, N.Y. Sues ExxonMobil

Law360, New York (February 8, 2007, 12:00 AM EST) -- Over half a century after plumes of oil first oozed into Greenpoint, Brooklyn, the State of New York on Thursday finally initiated legal action against ExxonMobil and four other oil companies to force a cleanup of what has turned into a 17 million gallon spill.

The spill came from numerous leaks in the 1940s and 50s from nearby refineries owned by ExxonMobil, ChevronTexaco and other oil companies. It remained undetected until a 1978 U.S. Coast Guard patrol discovered large plumes of oil flowing out from Newton...
