Microsoft Takes On IBM For U.S. Patent Mantle

Law360, New York (July 29, 2004, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Microsoft Corp. plans to increase patent filings sharply this year, taking on IBM for the mantle as the most active corporation in the intellectual property area in the U.S.

Microsoft will file for more than 3,000 patents in fiscal year 2005, which began July 1, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates said at an annual analyst meeting on Thursday. This is a "fairly dramatic increase" over its fiscal year 2004 patent activity, in which slightly more than 2,000 patents were filed, he said.
