Supreme Court Hearing Set For Microsoft, AT&T Case

Law360, New York (February 20, 2007, 12:00 AM EST) -- The U.S. Supreme Court is set to hear a patent case Wednesday concerning whether infringement damages under U.S. patent law extend to software products sold overseas.

The dispute between Microsoft Corp. and AT&T Corp. centers on Windows programs distributed outside the United States. In July 2005, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled that Microsoft was liable for the unauthorized distribution of AT&T-patented codec technology, used to compress speech signals into data, in copies of Windows sold overseas.
