VIA Unit Pays $25M To Settle MediaTek Chip Patent Suit

Law360, New York (August 3, 2004, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Taiwanese chipmakers VIA Technologies and MediaTek have settled their far-flung litigation over patents, copyrights and trade secrets related to chipsets and firmware for optical storage devices, fought in Taiwanese and U.S. courts since 2002.

Under the agreement, VIA’s subsidiary, VIA Optical Solution Inc., will pay MediaTek $25 million to take a license for MediaTek’s intellectual property. For the next five year, the division will pay $5 million per year in royalties for technology currently implemented in its optical storage products, the companies said.
