DOC Unveils Plans To Beef Up Trade Enforcement

Law360, New York (August 26, 2010, 1:40 PM EDT) -- Commerce Secretary Gary Locke on Thursday unveiled 14 proposed measures he hopes will strengthen the country's enforcement of trade laws, including requiring cash deposits from importers as soon as preliminary duty determinations are made.

The measures, part of the Obama administration's initiative to create new jobs and double exports in five years, focus particularly on toughening the nation's stance against illegal import practices from nonmarket economies, which comprise about a third of duty cases, the U.S. Department of Commerce said in a statement Thursday.
