Ex-Chevron Employee's Slander Suit Endures

Law360, New York (September 3, 2010, 4:49 PM EDT) -- A federal judge has upheld a slander suit brought by a fired Chevron USA Inc. employee who claims a former co-worker spread rumors that he visited brothels, when in fact he had only received lap dances at gentlemen's clubs.

Chevron may be liable for the gossip under the doctrine of respondeat superior, the legal doctrine that can make an employer liable for an employees' actions, Magistrate Judge Maria-Elena James said Thursday in an order filed with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California....
