SC River Cleanup To Exceed Contract Costs, GAO Says

Law360, New York (September 16, 2010, 6:25 PM EDT) -- Savannah River Remediation LLC's cleanup of radioactive waste tanks in South Carolina will take longer and cost 44 percent more than the $3.2 billion originally estimated in its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy, Congress' investigative arm has said.

The U.S. Government Accountability Office released a report Tuesday that said the cost increase resulted from the DOE submitting a cost estimate in its September 2007 request for proposals that was neither comprehensive nor accurate.

The GAO also blamed construction delays on bad scheduling practices....
