DOI Orders Energy Cos. To Decommission 'Idle Iron'

Law360, New York (September 15, 2010, 6:46 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of the Interior is requiring oil and gas companies operating in the Gulf of Mexico to quickly set permanent plugs in non-producing wells and dismantle unused oil and gas production platforms.

The announcement issued Wednesday is aimed at what's known as “idle iron” or wells, platforms and pipelines no longer in service.
