Kerr-McGee Owes US $23M Over Royalty Shortage

Law360, New York (September 20, 2010, 1:59 PM EDT) -- A federal judge has ruled that Kerr-McGee Oil & Gas Corp. must pay the U.S. government $22.9 million over shortfalls in the company's royalty payments to the now-defunct Minerals Management Service.

The award of more than $7.6 million — calculated by a jury then trebled in accordance with the False Claims Act — stands even though MMS itself did not think it had been cheated, Judge Marcia Krieger of the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado ruled Thursday, ending the case.
