St. Jude Insurer Remains On Hook For Silzone Claims

Law360, New York (September 21, 2010, 6:18 PM EDT) -- A federal judge has ruled that American Insurance Co. must cover St. Jude Medical Inc. for hundreds of claims arising from allegedly defective Silzone heart valves.

In a partial summary judgment Monday, the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota ruled that American Insurance must pay out on St. Jude's $50 million excess liability coverage policy, which was supposed to kick in after the medical product maker exhausted $150 million in underlying insurance or self-assurance, according to the court order.
