Iowa Gov't Workers Win Class Cert. In Race Bias Case

Law360, New York (September 30, 2010, 6:59 PM EDT) -- A judge has granted class certification to black Iowa residents who allege they were systematically denied jobs and promotions in the state government.

In an order issued Tuesday, Judge Robert Blink of the Iowa District Court for Polk County ruled that the 32-plaintiff suit against the Iowa government could proceed on class claims that could involve thousands of black Iowans.

The plaintiffs’ arguments, Judge Blink said, satisfied common interest, case manageability and other criteria for class certification in the state.
