Judge Awards Halliburton $36M In Patent Suit Vs. Smith International

Law360, New York (August 18, 2004, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Oil field supplier Smith International has been ordered by a federal judge in Texas to pay rival Halliburton $36 million in a patent infringement case.

A judge in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas slammed additional damages on the company after a jury found the infringement to be willful. The judge entered a final judgment for $36 million, which includes the $24 million jury award, plus approximately $5 million of attorneys' fees and prejudgment interest.
