E.U. Opens Gambling Market

Law360, New York (March 7, 2007, 12:00 AM EST) -- In a decision that could take the gambling business in Europe out of government hands, Europe’s highest court has ruled that Italian laws keeping foreign companies out of the game violate E.U. regulations.

The Luxembourg-based Court of Justice of the European Communities criticized Italy’s restrictions on the sports betting market, which essentially exclude foreigners from participating. It also disapproved of the country’s use of criminal penalties to enforce the laws.

The court’s decision could lead to the opening of other member states’ gambling industries.
