DOJ May Block Derivative Exchange Merger

Law360, New York (March 13, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Justice may be gearing up to block the impending merger of derivatives exchanges Chicago Mercantile Exchange Holdings Inc. and CBOT Holdings Inc., according to reports.

The DOJ has requested signed statements from competitors of the exchanges detailing their concerns over the merger, which would create the world’s largest derivatives exchange, according to a report published by Crain’s Chicago Business. The agency has also contacted customers of the exchanges with a similar request, Crain’s reported.
