EU Looks To Ban Detergent Phosphates By 2013

Law360, New York (November 5, 2010, 3:47 PM EDT) -- A new rule proposed in the European Union would ban phosphates and limit the amounts of other phosphorous-based chemicals in laundry detergents in an effort to boost water quality across the 27-member bloc.

The draft regulation, proposed Thursday, would not apply to detergents for automatic dishwashers or those used by professional launderers because there are not economical alternatives available throughout Europe, the European Commission said.
