DOJ Hits N.Y. Prison Department With Title VII Suit

Law360, New York (March 16, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a civil rights lawsuit against New York’s Department of Correctional Services, slamming it for discriminating against Muslims by enforcing stringent uniform and grooming requirements.

The state correctional department’s rules do not leave room to accommodate employees’ religious practices or requirements, the DOJ charged in its complaint, filed Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
