Novartis Hit With $1M Ruling In Aredia, Zometa Suit

Law360, New York (November 24, 2010, 5:02 PM EST) -- A North Carolina court hit Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp. with a $1.2 million judgment Monday after jurors found the company failed to warn a woman's doctor the bone drugs Aredia and Zometa could cause a severe jaw disease known as osteonecrosis.

The jury in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina issued its verdict Nov. 22, initially levying punitive damages of $12.6 million and compensatory damages of $287,000. State law limits punitive damages to three times the compensatory damages, so Judge James A....
