NY Assembly Votes To Suspend Hydraulic Fracturing

Law360, New York (November 30, 2010, 2:14 PM EST) -- The New York State Assembly has approved legislation that would place a temporary moratorium on hydraulic fracturing, a controversial method of natural gas drilling that energy companies want to use to tap into the state's gas-rich shale formations.

The bill, passed Monday evening by an unofficial 93-43 vote tally, would suspend the issuance of new permits for such drilling in the Marcellus Shale and the neighboring Utica Shale until May 15, 2011.
