Newspaper Tramples On Journalistic Ideals: Union

Law360 (March 27, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Claiming that the Washington Post Co. has thrown out a key journalistic principle by revealing off-the-record comments, a union representing 1,250 staffers filed an unfair labor practice claim Monday with the National Labor Relations Board.

The Newspaper Guild’s complaint claims that the Post violated its statutory obligation to bargain in good faith by publicly disclosing the terms of confidential settlement discussions held from late 2003 to early 2005 regarding the publication of staff articles on the newspaper’s Web site.
