Judge OK's DOJ Approval Of Telecom Mergers

Law360 (March 30, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A federal judge gave final approval on Thursday to consent decrees negotiated by the U.S. Department of Justice over two major 2005 telecom mergers, agreeing that both settlements were in the public interest.

The settlements with the DOJ allowed SBC Communications to buy AT&T Corp. and Verizon Communications to buy MCI Inc. In both deals, the DOJ forced the companies to sell off certain overlapping assets when it filed complaints against them in 2005.
