Wis. Archdiocese Seeks Ch. 11 Protection

Law360, New York (January 4, 2011, 7:23 PM EST) -- The Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee said Tuesday it would file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, citing its inability to pay financial claims and legal costs in civil suits over priests' alleged sexual abuse of minors.

Archbishop Jerome Listecki told the archdiocese’s attorneys to file a petition for reorganization in U.S. bankruptcy court in Wisconsin, saying the move was triggered by a November decision in a state appeals court that absolved insurers of responsibility to cover defense costs.
