US Seeks Arbitration In Canadian Lumber War

Law360, New York (January 18, 2011, 7:05 PM EST) -- The U.S. on Tuesday sought to haul Canada into an arbitration proceeding over the northern neighbor's alleged violation of a 2006 agreement on softwood lumber exports by underpricing timber harvested from public lands in British Columbia.

The request for arbitration was filed in the London Court of International Arbitration, according to U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk, who made the announcement.

Kirk said Canada's practices were harming U.S. workers and companies, and that the neighbor's actions were inconsistent with its obligations under the 2006 pact.
