DOJ Eyes Defibrillators In Medicare Overbilling Probe

Law360 (January 25, 2011, 5:38 PM EST) -- As part of its probe of the medical device sector, the U.S. Department of Justice has recruited the Heart Rhythm Society to determine if hospitals have improperly billed Medicare for defibrillator implants.

The HRS, a leading international cardiac advocacy group, announced Friday that it agreed to advise the DOJ in its False Claims Act investigation of the implantable cardioverter defibrillator market, bringing clinical expertise to the task of determining whether hospitals billed Medicare for ICDs implanted in patients not qualified for coverage.
