EU Watchdog Grounds Greek Airline Merger

Law360, New York (January 26, 2011, 12:55 PM EST) -- In an unusual move Wednesday, European antitrust regulators blocked a proposed merger between Greece's two largest airlines, Aegean Airlines SA and Olympic Air SA, saying the combination would create a quasi-monopoly in the country's air transportation industry.

The European Commission concluded that together, the airlines would have held a virtual monopoly for nine transportation routes between Athens and other major destinations in Greece.
