Law360 (February 1, 2011, 5:34 PM EST) -- The joint venture of Comcast and NBC Universal, which cleared regulatory review at the Federal Communications Commission and the U.S. Department of Justice recently, is one of the largest-ever mergers of a video programming producer and a video distributor.
Notwithstanding the size of the merger, however, Comcast and NBCU have a relationship that's mostly vertical. Although Comcast is the largest so-called multichannel video programming distributor (MVPD) in the U.S., and NBCU is one of the largest sources of programming that MVPDs distribute, including series television, sports and movies, the companies don't compete directly in any significant line of business.
