Gowanus Superfund Site Could Pose Health Risk: EPA

Law360, New York (February 2, 2011, 7:41 PM EST) -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Wednesday that its investigation of the Gowanus Canal Superfund site in Brooklyn, N.Y., revealed widespread contamination that could pose ecological and human health risks.

The remedial investigation of the New York City waterway confirmed high levels of more than a dozen contaminants, including polychlorinated biphenyls, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, mercury, lead and copper in the sediment of the canal, as well as PAHs and metals in the water.
