EU Court Trims Spanish Tobacco Cartel Fine To €3.2M

Law360, New York (February 3, 2011, 4:41 PM EST) -- A European court upheld the bulk of a cartel fine against Spanish tobacco processor Compania Espanola de Tabaco en Rama SA on Thursday, trimming the penalty by about €500,000 ($682,000) to €3.15 million.

The General Court of the European Union rejected the company's claim that the European Commission unfairly hit five processors with multimillion-euro fines while imposing only symbolic €1,000 fines on tobacco growers for likewise participating in collective price negotiations.
